Rebel of the Month: Eh-Nihilator #49th Parallel

Roller derby name and number: Eh-Nihilator, 49th Parallel. But I normally just get called Canada.

Roller derby position – on the track (and why): Blocker: when I played hockey my role was to get in the other team’s way and keep them busy so my team-mates can score goals, in roller derby I do the same thing so jammers can score points.

Roller derby position – off the track (and why): I actually don’t have one, I just try to help out with whatever the team needs help with.

How long have you been playing roller derby for GRR? October 2010, I joined right after I moved to Florida and realized there wasn’t a hockey rink within 100 miles.

How did you come up with your name and number? The team has called me Canada since the recruitment night, I think it had something to do with me being from Canada but I could be wrong, it might have been the Canadian t-shirt I was wearing that night. Sticking with the Canadian thing Eh-Nihilator because all Canadians say Eh, and when my teammates call me by eh, it makes them sound Canadian and I think it’s funny. And the 49th parallel because that’s the oh so important Canada-US border.

Do you have any pre- or post-bout rituals? not really, but I do always have a beer after the game.

What is your favoUrite thing about playing roller derby for GRR? everything; awesome sport, even more awesome team

What is your most memorable GRR roller derby experience? So far it has got to be our away bout in Panama City. Winning, my birthday, the Yacht Club, playground on the beach, hockey cake… just so much awesomeness

If you had a theme song, what would it be? ”Oh Canada” or maybe the Hockey Night in Canada theme song

Aside from roller derby, what are you passionate about? Clay. I went to art school for ceramics; I make functional pottery for the everyday. It’s a lot of fun and it’s taken me lots of places; it brought me to Gainesville for a Post-Baccalaureate ceramics program at UF. So thanks to clay I joined GRR.

What would GRR fans be surprised to know about you? I’m thinking of taking up lurking on larping as a new hobby

What makes you a Rebel? Being Canadian? Or maybe that I don’t understand positional only blocking at practice.

Likes: Snow, toboggans, ice, the monarchy, toques, both kinds of curling, putting the letter u in words, and sharing the sheer awesomeness of the Great White North.

Dislikes: Fahrenheit, miles, ounces… also Florida summer

Guilty pleasures: Cheering for the Toronto Maple Leafs. They haven’t won the cup since the 60s and they haven’t even made the playoffs since 2004, so lame.
