Final Score: Gainesville Roller Rebels 209, Tampa Bay Cruise Crew 27

It was almost a year ago – March 27, 2011 – that the Tampa Bay Cruise Crew last traveled north to take on the Gainesville Roller Rebels. GRR won that bout, 80-191. TBBC is Tampa’s B traveling team, with half home team skaters and half of the skaters from Tampa Tantrums (WFTDA A Travel Team).

Ready for a rematch and hoping to create a winning streak, TBBC and GRR respectively lined up on the track at Skate Station for the March 31, 2012 bout.

Jammers Krispy Kreme-Her (#0), Suzie Bonebreaker (#13) and Lebrawn Maimes (#23) started off the night by securing the first three jammer positions for the Roller Rebels. The level of athleticism and competition was high throughout the bout, but this early momentum was crucial and set the tone for the evening.

Gainesville Roller Rebels blockers were a critical element in the March 31, 2012 blowout against the visiting team, Tampa Bay Bruise Crew.

With a score of 13-0 (Rebels), Tampa Bay Bruise Crew was ready for a change of pace. Taz Maniac (#7) snagged the first lead jammer position for TBBC in the fourth jam of the night. GRR blocker Atomic Mel-Down (#U-235) knocked Taz Maniac into the center, forcing her to call the jam from the floor before either team could score.

Jammer Stella Knockout (#620) put TBBC on the board in the next jam, gaining 4 points for the visiting team. GRR blockers Noam Bombsky (#12), Blockbuster (#33) and Demonomia (#138) were able to slow the pack down and get a no-pack call allowing GRR jammer Suzie Bonebreaker to get through the pack, forcing Stella to call off the jam.

The penalty box was busy that night, with GRR jammer LeBrawn Maimes taking an early visit to the box in the sixth jam. Despite this, no lead jammer was called thanks to the impenetrable wall of GRR blockers Dr. PopHer (#P450), Atomic Mel-Down and Demonomia. PopHer forced TBBC jammer Lil Bit Breaker (#365) to the floor, with little time remaining. LeBrawn exited the penalty box just as the jam ended.

Soon enough Suzie Bonebreaker widened the gap with an amazing pie-in-the-sky jam, earning 15 points for GRR. With TBCC jammer Klymaxxx (#140 miles) in the penalty box and two no-pack calls, Bonebreaker circled the track with ease. Atomic Mel-Down and Demonomia spent significant time in the penalty box, but GRR blocker Rage-Rienne (#1122) was able to take down Klymaxxx as she re-entered the track. With a score of 33-7, the Roller Rebels didn’t look back for the rest of the night.

The GRR Power Trio of Grizzly Madams (#2nd Amendment), Noam Bombsky and Atomic Mel-Down kept TBBC jammer Sketch E. Artist (#747) back as LeBrawn Maimes raked in another 14 points. (47-7)

Both teams fought to put points on the board through the next few jams, which featured numerous no-pack calls and nose-to-nose jams.

The score was 55-16, and Suzie Bonebreaker was back on the track looking to score. TBBC blocker Tic Tac Toni (#XO) kept Bonebreaker back, forcing her to call the jam with only one point.

The Roller Rebels continued to steadily put points on the board a few at a time for the rest of the first half. Lined up for the last jam of the first half, TBBC Stella Knockout was forced to wait for the second half as the clock ran out before the whistle. With only 20 points, TBBC was looking for a comeback against GRR’s 55 point lead. (75-20)

Jammer Stella Knockout took on LeBrawn Maimes in the opening jam of the second half. The TBBC pack took a knee to start the 27th jam of the evening with a no-pack call. LeBrawn hugged the inside of the track, while Grizzly Madams, Blockbuster, Noam Bombsky and Atomic Mel-Down kept Stella at bay. Lead Jammer LeBrawn fell down and called the jam as she fell to the floor, earning 7 points that jam.

LeBrawn and Stella met again a few jams later. TBBC looked to secure lead jammer position, with GRR blockers Grizzly, Noam Bombsky and Demonomia warming seats in the penalty box. GRR blocker Atomic Mel-Down represented the pack by her lonesome on the track. Stella Knockout received a major track-cutting penalty as Mel-Down knocked her out, also receiving a penalty. With no pack and no GRR blockers on the track, LeBrawn skated freely. GRR blockers returned, and Noam Bombsky held back TBBC’s Liquor Possi (#313) and Tic Tac Toni, letting LeBrawn pass. Stella returned, and LeBrawn called off the jam, having scored an unbelievable 19 points during a jam that started with GRR in the box. (106-20)

The Roller Rebels momentum was unstoppable. Jammers Krispy Kreme-Her, Suzie Bonebreaker and LeBrawn Maimes continued to score points, while GRR blockers kept TBBC behind. (116-27)

GRR jammer Krispy Kreme-Her took the line against TBBC jammer Klymaxxx mid-way through the second half. GRR blockers Stocky Balboa (#170) and Noam Bombsky teamed up to keep Klymaxxx behind the pack. Klymaxxx took a major inside cut and ended up in the penalty box. With GRR blockers controlling the track at a standstill, Krispy casually lapped the pack, adding another 15 points to the GRR scoreboard for a score of 131-27.

GRR jammers Suzie Bonebreaker and LeBrawn Maimes kept the GRR lead jammer streak, while the GRR pack continued to stop TBBC from scoring points. Blockbuster, Noam Bombsky and Rosie D. Ribsplitter (#108) held TBBC captain Stella Knockout to zero points.

Krispy Kreme-Her was at it again, this time lined up against TBBC jammer Taz Maniac. The TBBC pack took a knee, starting off the jam with a no-pack call. Krispy began a toe-stop run on the inside line and secured lead jammer position, calling off the jam after scoring four points. (146-27)

Excited fans filled the crowd and fueled the GRR fire. Suzie Bonebreaker took the link against TBBC jammer Klymaxxx. A solid pack seemed difficult to get through, but GRR blocker Blockbuster helped Suzie through to secure lead jammer position, while the rest of the blockers – Noam Bombsky, Zelda Shagnasty (#69) and Stocky Balboa – kept Klymaxxx to the back of the pack. Bombsky stopped a TBBC whip move, and Blockbuster knocked Klymaxxx off the track in a spin. This full two-minute jam ended with a three-time Grand Slam by Bonebreaker and a goose egg for TBBC. (161-27)

GRR was unstoppable. LeBrawn Maimes took a hard hit by TBBC blocker Liquor Possi, but was still able to get the lead jammer position. Krispy Kreme-Her added another nine points, while TBBC jammer Taz Maniac watched from the penalty box.

Unfortunately, shortly after in the last jam of the bout Taz Maniac would watch Krispy again from the penalty box. After the TBBC jammer jumped the line before the whistle, Krispy scored the final 14 points for the Roller Rebels bringing the final score to 209-27.

Don’t let the final score fool you. The Gainesville Roller Rebels intra-league bout and 2012 season opener was filled with tension and excitement.

This was the first of three match-ups in 2012 between the Swamp City Sirens and the Millhopper Devils, the Gainesville Roller Rebels’ Home Teams.

The first jam of the night looked promising for the Swamp City Sirens as LeBrawn Maimes secured the lead-jammer position in a nose-to-nose race through a strong pack. Millhopper Devils jammer Suzie Bonebreaker was right behind, though, and LeBrawn was forced to call off the jam with a score of 0-0. Things slowly picked up from there with visiting skater Laya Landmine of Jacksonville Rollergirls scoring the first points for the Swamp City Sirens. After almost wiping out in the fourth jam, LeBrawn was lead jammer again and scored six points. The pack was tight, but Patsy Clothesline put the Millhopper Devils on the board before the jam was over. The score hovered at 10-1 until Noam Bombsky took lead jammer position for the Millhopper Devils thanks to some incredible blocking skills by Devils’ Rage-Rienne. Sirens Atomic Mel-Down and Blockbuster forced Bombsky to call the jam early. Bombsky picked up 4 points cutting the lead to 10-5 and gaining momentum for the Devils.

Millhopper Devils’ Suzie Bonebreaker was able to close the point gap even more in the next jam, which took place equally on the track and in the penalty box. Bonebreaker was sent to the box early before a lead jam position was earned. Laya Landmine was whipped through the pack and continued for a Grand Slam before Devils’ Krispy KremeHer went for a block. Krispy missed, but Landmine went on to cut the track and was sent to the box, freeing Bonebreaker to earn points with no lead jammer on the track. With Landmine out, the Devils pack split forcing the refs to make a no-pack call, allowing Bonebreaker to rack up 9 points for the Devils and a close score of 15-14.

Shortly after, the first injury of the night occurred. LeBrawn Maimes was in lead jam position when Bonebreaker took a hit from Marty Maraschino assisted by 12 Gauge of the Jacksonville Rollergirls requiring medical attention. With a leg injury, Bonebreaker cheered on the Devils from the bench for the remainder of the bout.

The first period ended with a nine-point performance by Sirens lead jammer Killary Clinton. Killary fought her way through a tight pack bringing the first period to an end with a score of 29-17.

Hungry to close the score gap in the second period, visiting skater Blaque Jac of the Bradentucky Bombers fought hard for the Millhopper Devils. Her fight ended early, however, after being sent to the penalty box. Opposing jammer LeBrawn Maimes seized the opportunity, scoring an incredible three Grand Slams. The Swamp City Sirens’ lead extended to 22 points (49-27).

Swamp City Sirens blocker Blockbuster stopped Millhopper Devils jammer Patsy Clothesline both from getting lead jammer position and scoring points midway through the second period. The Devils attempted to return the favor in the next jam. Taking a knee for a no-pack call, it looked like the Devils’ jammer would get lead position after the pack stopped LeBrawn Maimes from getting through. LeBrawn jumped back up quickly, though, and made it through the pack twice before calling the jam from the floor.

The Swamp City Sirens played strategically and held the Millhopper Devils to an almost scoreless second half of the second period. The Devils’ score stayed at 35 for the last six jams. The Sirens were able to score lead jammer position and pick up a few points each jam, despite Devils jammer Noam Bombsky on the heels of the Sirens. Strong blocks by Devils blockers by Rage-Rienne and Patsy Clothesline kept the Sirens point increase low. The second period ended with a score of 75-35.

In the third and final period of the night, Blaque Jac was back at the jammer line and secured lead jammer position. Sirens jammer LeBrawn Maimes was able to catch up before sliding off the track, and the third period looked promising for the Devils. But not for long. After a major cut penalty was called, Blaque Jac was sent to the penalty box. Devils blocker Rage-Rienne wasn’t deterred and fought to keep LeBrawn behind the pack twice until both times a no-pack call forced Rage-Rienne to let the jammer through. Blaque Jac made it out of the penalty box in time to score four points before the full two-minute jam ended. LeBrawn scored an incredible 19 points, bringing the lead to 96-39.

Notable lead jam positions by Sirens Killary Clinton, Laya Landmine, and LeBrawn Maimes earned the Sirens a 121-44 lead.

With eight minutes left in the third period, Skate Station Funworks was silenced when visiting skater Lola D’Bruizky of the Jacksonville Rollergirls was injured. Playing for the Swamp City Sirens, D’Bruizky was knocked out of the pack and to the floor where she barely moved awaiting medical attention. Gainesville Roller Rebels medics assessed her injuries and called a local ambulance. The mood was tense as the worried crowd looked for clues to the extent of D’Bruizky’s injuries. Announcer Glyph Huckster confirmed a case of whiplash. A strong part of the Sirens’ pack all evening, D’Bruizky was taken away by ambulance to the hospital to be treated. She left with a standing ovation by skaters and cheers from the crowd. D’Bruizky later reported that she was doing well and had a lot of fun at the bout.

Devils’ jammer Blaque Jac returned to the jammer line, and the bout resumed with Sirens’ jammer Killary Clinton in the penalty box. Blaque Jac easily took lead jammer position with a no-pack call by refs. Midway through her Power Jam, Blaque Jac was sent to the penalty box with a back-block call, releasing Killary Clinton. It was a brief appearance as Killary was called for cutting the track, and the jammers once again traded places. Blaque Jac was out and ready to score, but Sirens’ blockers Marty Maraschino, Rosie D. Ribsplitter and 12 Gauge were able to stop Blaque Jac until Rage-Rienne strategically slowed behind the pack and a no-pack call was made. Blaque Jac made it through and called the jam after scoring 10 points.

In the final jam of the night, no lead jammer was called. Devils jammer Jonesy started the jam in the penalty box, but Killary Clinton was sent to the box early for cutting the track. Jonesy was right behind her with a track-cutting penalty. Killary was back on the track, but a pile-up with Marty Maraschino and Krispy Kreme-Her prevented Killary from getting through the pack. 12 Gauge pulled Killary up from the floor and pushed her through the most of the pack. Rage-Rienne found herself blocking a Sirens jammer for the last time as a no-pack call was made. Despite nearly doubling their score in the third period, the Devils were not able to make a comeback. The final score was 136-62.

It was a slow start to Sunday evening’s women’s flat track derby bout between the Gainesville Roller Rebels and the Thunder City Derby Sirens, hailing from Central Florida. After GRR’s Millhopper Devils lost by less than 20 points to Thunder City just over a month ago, the Gainesville Roller Rebels were hungry for redemption. GRR had endurance and strategy on their side as they upset Thunder City.

LeBrawn Maimes (#23) took the first lead jammer position of the night against TCDS Binky BoomBoom (#8) after a crucial block by Demonomia (#138). LeBrawn called off the jam early, with GRR warming up the scoreboard to 1-0. Gainesville continued its lead jammer streak racking up the score to 15-0 before TCDS’s Messer Up (#f0 sh0) gained momentum after an early collision in the sixth jam. However, the Roller Rebels maintained a fast pack and held the Derby Sirens to one point.

Gainesville began strategic calls early in the bout with a no-pack, knee-down quick start in the seventh jam. With blockers taking a knee before the jammers’ line, the referees must call a no-pack situation, which allows the jammers to get a faster start. LeBrawn added another four points to the Home scoreboard bringing Gainesville’s lead to 19-1.

TCDS Messer Up put up another three points before LeBrawn Maimes was at the jammer line again, this time against Slamaretto Sour (#54-46). A strong block by Eh-Nihilator (#49th Parallel) kept Slamaretto in the back as LeBrawn broke through the pack. Both teams scored four points; a small gain for Gainesville, but a successful jam for Thunder City as they doubled their score.

Krispy Kreme-Her (#0) had her fourth lead jammer position of the night with the help of Roller Rebels blocker Roll It Up (#420), who successfully closed in on TCDS jammer Messer Up. A minor collision prompted Krispy to call the jam with Gainesville still in the lead by 18 points (28-10).

After a slew of steady jams by Gainesville and a score of 34-16, Suzie Bonebreaker (#13) faced Slamaretto. Suzie made it through the pack for lead jammer position and again for four points before calling off the jam. Blocking phenom Noam Bombsky (#12) held Slamaretto and TCDS to one point. Gainesville continued strategic pack play, but both teams failed to earn points in the following six jams.

Just as the slow first half was winding down, Suzie Bonebreaker lined up against Slayor Moon (#’67), in her debut jam of the night. Gainesville started off with a slow pack as Suzie made it through early. However, a minor penalty took away any chance of Suzie becoming the lead jammer. Stuck behind the pack, Slayor Moon failed to break through the Roller Rebels solid front. With no lead jammer, the jam went the full two minutes. Suzie circled yet again, completing a grand slam and scoring 18 points.

Cheers echoed through Skate Station, and with a score of 56-16, both the crowd and the players seemed re-energized as the first half came to a close. After another knee-down, no-pack situation, LeBrawn Maimes brought the score to 62-16 to end the first half.

The second half started off slightly faster than the first, but still with low- and steady-scoring jams. Suzie Bonebreaker took advantage of a slow pack in the first jam of the second half. With only Pebbles Flinchstone in her way, Suzie knocked down Pebbles and scored four points before calling it off. With a score of 78-18, TCDS got lead jammer position back to back. Unfortunately, LeBrawn Maimes and Krispy Kreme-Her were hot on the tails of Messer Up and Binky BoomBoom; they had no choice but to call off the jams without scoring.

Early in the second half, Suzie Bonebreaker completed another Grand Slam, bringing the point totals to 82-24. Atomic Mel-Down (#U-235) and Stocky Balboa (#TK0) held TCDS to a zero point gain, knocking Derby Siren jammer Binky BoomBoom off the track. The Roller Rebels’ seasoned blocking skills allowed LeBrawn Maimes to rack up five more points.

Noam Bombsky joined Atomic Mel-Down and Stocky Balboa to block TCDS jammer Messer Up, allowing Suzie to get the lead jammer position. Atomic Mel-Down held down the back of the pack, knocking Messer Up out of bounds, leading to a track-cutting penalty that landed Messer Up in the box, while Suzie earned another 10 points for Gainesville (98-24). Jammer Slamaretto Sour picked up the lead and four points before calling the jam early.

The next jam sent roars through the crowd, but not in Thunder City’s favor. Jamming once again for the Gainesville Roller Rebels, LeBrawn Maimes faced Derby Siren threat Messer Up, the away jammer who scored 14 of TCDS’ 28 points. Before making it through the pack, Messer Up was sent to the box for cutting the track. In another show of strategic finesse, Gainesville controlled a slow-speed pack, ensuring LeBrawn’s grand slam and another 24 points (126-28).

Gainesville blocker Grizzly Madams (#2nd Amendment) propelled Krispy Kreme-Her through the pack marking her eleventh time as lead jammer. The score hovered close to 131-28 until a no-pack call and intense blocking by Atomic Mel-Down and Eh-Nihilator kept the Roller Rebels in the lead jammer position.

In one of the final jams of the evening, Patsy Clothesline vied for lead jammer against Binky BoomBoom, who scored the last point for Thunder City. With a track cutting penalty called, Binky joined a fellow Derby Siren in the penalty box. Patsy easily made her way through the thin pack with the help of her blockers. TCDS Phoenix Fawes Em Up (#41) almost edged Patsy out, but Patsy couldn’t be stopped, bringing the score to 155-31. LeBrawn Maimes scored four points in the last jam of the night, finishing with a score of 159-31 and holding on to a winning season of 12-5.

Trouble Clef and Noam Bombsky were voted MVP blockers for TCDS and GRR, respectively. Derby Siren Messer Up earned well-deserved bragging rights of MVP Jammer, having scored 14 of TCDS’ 31 points. With over 45 points, Suzie Bonebreaker was named Gainesville Roller Rebels’ MVP jammer.

In a town where Gator games dictate wedding plans and entire wardrobes are based on the orange and blue, it was fitting that the Gainesville Roller Rebels would pit orange—the Swamp City Sirens—against blue—the Millhopper Devils—in GRR’s intra-league bout Sept. 24, 2011.

The bout was GRR’s first public, intra-league bout in a few years and despite some overlap with a Gators football game airing during the bout, the turnout was good as Gainesville showed up to support its derby team. The bout was Gainesville’s second in two weeks, coming off of a 146-86 loss against Gold Coast Derby Grrls on Sept. 16 in Coral Gables. Some familiar faces from Gold Coast — Lucy Liunatic, Spontaneous Combustya, Tsunami Tsue, Baller Shot Caller, Jess Business, Shred-Her, and Tackle Me Elmo — made the drive up from South Florida to fill out the Gainesville rosters for the intra-league bout.

Krispy Kreme-Her (#0) got the first lead jam of the night for the Blue team and scored five points before Orange jammer LeBrawn Maimes (#23) could rack up any points. After earning 13 points in the first four jams and edging out an early 8-point lead over Blue, Orange made a comeback and managed to tie things up at 17-17 after four consecutive lead jams. Orange took over the lead spot with a 25-20 score thanks to a grand slam by LeBrawn. The lead was short-lived, however, as Blue’s Suzie Bonebreaker’s (#13) grand slam tied the score again at 25-25. Krispy Kreme-Her was the next jammer up for Blue and was able to score 13 points thanks to the superb blocking of Demonomia (#138), Marty Maraschino (#507), Tackle Me Elmo (#96), and Jess Business (#49), who kept powerful Orange jammer Spontaneous Combustya (#800) at bay. Blue team’s Suzie Bonebreaker and Baller Shot Caller (#143) continued to hold Orange back for the next two jams, with Suzie scoring four points and Baller getting a triple grand slam while Orange jammer LeBrawn was in the penalty box.

Blue went into the next jam with a 25-57 lead, but Orange’s Spontaneous Combustya was able to narrow the gap to 44-57 with all of the Blue team in the penalty box at some point during the jam. The score stayed close going into the last jam of the first half, and while Blue remained in the lead, Orange had closed the gap to just 9 points. But that last jam proved fruitful for Blue, with Suzie Bonebreaker adding 20 points to Blue’s lead while Orange struggled with players in the sin bin. At the end of the first half, Blue led 50-79, with Suzie heading to the penalty box at the end of her quadruple grand slam.

Despite starting with a jammer in the box, Blue still outscored Orange in the first jam of the second half, with Suzie Bonebreaker racking up 8 points. Orange jammer LeBrawn earned 5 points and a trip to the penalty box for a major cutting the track. LeBrawn turned the tables during the next jam, managing to earn lead jammer status after coming out of the box and scoring 10 points with Blue jammer Eh-Nihilator (#49th Parallel) adding 2 points to Blue’s lead. Blue held on to lead jammer status for the next four jams, though, and were 75-108 with Suzie looking to have lead jammer status locked in for the fifth consecutive jam. A major track cutting penalty, thanks to a hit by Orange blocker Atomic Mel-Down (#U-235), sent Suzie to the penalty box. Orange jammer Lucy Liunatic (#88) quickly took lead jammer status and scored 15 points, edging in on Blue at 90-108. The closest Orange got to overcoming Blue’s lead happened after another jam with Lucy in lead jammer status, leaving the score 121-128. After that there were just seven more jams in the bout, with each team getting about the same number of lead jams. Blue held Orange at 127 points for four jams while adding on 7 points, bringing the score going into the final jam 127-142, with Blue in the lead. With a few seconds left on the clock, Orange still had a shot, and Orange jammer Spontaneous Combustya quickly got lead jammer but could only score 4 points before the jam was called off due to an injury. With a final score of 131-142, it was a close game but in the end GRR won either way! MVP Jammer for Blue was Krispy Kreme-Her and for Orange Lucy Liunatic. MVP Blocker for Blue was Baller Shot Caller and for Orange Atomic Mel-Down.

Attention GRR fans! Our league is going through a great transition as we have welcomed several new skaters who have passed their skills test over the previous months.

So far this season, GRR has played primarily as the Gainesville Roller Rebels (A-team) and the Millhopper Devils (B-team). For the upcoming Orange and Blue bout, however, we are testing a new model! We are going to be mixing our A-team and B-teams to make two new home teams. While we still have several A-team and B-team bouts to finish up this season, our model for next season will be to have a travel team (the Gainesville Roller Rebel All-Stars) and two equally-matched home teams (the Swamp City Sirens and Millhopper Devils).

GRR is proud to have such a supportive fan base as we keep growing and improving!

Come cheer on your hometown GRRls at the Orange and Blue bout on September 24th! Or, if you happen to be in the Miami area next weekend, GRR’s All-Stars will be taking on the Gold Coast Derby Grrls at the Miami Bank United Center!
