Spank You, Beach Brawl!

GRR played an intensely physical game on Saturday, April 4, versus the Beach Brawl Sk8r Dolls on their home turf in Fort Walton Beach, a five-hour drive from Gainesville. Stocky Balboa and Silverback Sally bench coached, with Black-Out Brady captaining and Grizzly Madams taking the co-captain position.

Hard hits, rough falls and grand slams from Laura Ingalls Piledriver and Suzie Bonebreaker were the name of this game. Falling just short of victory, GRR left with 70 points to Beach Brawl’s 79, though all the players hugged it out at the after-party.

“I am so proud of our league tonight,” said Ms. Rebel, founder and president of GRR. “We played one of our best games ever, and are stoked on how much progress we’ve made since Sunshine Skate. I can’t wait to bout Beach Brawl again.”

Best wishes for a speedy recovery to those skaters injured on the track. See you beachy ladies in Hogtown in July!

Sunshine Skate 2009 – 2nd Annual Florida State Roller Derby Championship

Leagues from all over the state have been invited to battle each other for the title of State Champions — and GRR will be there! The games begin with GRR v. Panama City at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 15, at SkatePlex (5313 E. Busch Blvd., Tampa). The finals begin at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 16, at the Florida State Fairgrounds (4800 U.S. 301 North, Tampa).

Bruise it or lose it, ladies… GRR is once again looking for FRESH MEAT!

GRR’s next meet and greet is Monday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m. at the Alachua County Fairgrounds: 2900 NE 39th Ave. (main building). Check out our practice and stay after for a question-and-
answer session led by GRR players and staff. (Please note: This is not an open skating event. You must have a waiver on file as well as complete safety gear before skating with GRR.)

While you need to be female and 21 or older to skate with the league, anyone 18 or older can volunteer! We have positions open for refs, scorekeepers, statisticians, medics and more! If you want to be a part of GRR and have a talent/skill to share, come by and talk to us.

Thanks to everyone who came out last night, the community at-large, all Florida roller derby leagues and our generous sponsors who keep us afloat. It was a nail-biter, but the Stone Age finally triumphed over the Space Age with a final score of 82-79. Keep your eyes peeled for GRR’s first full season in 2009–we’re ready to kick some ass! GRR…

Sunday, Nov. 16: IT’S BOUT TIME! STONE AGE VS. SPACE AGE!
Advance tickets ($6) available now at Hyde & Zeke Records (402 NW 10th Ave.) and from your favorite rollergirl!

FREE RAFFLE TICKET WITH PAID ADMISSION! Tailgating begins at 4, live music begins at 4:30 with STRESSFACE and the battle between the roller cave women of the Stone Age and the derby femme bots of the Space Age begins at 5. BYOB (no glass, please) and a chair. (Note: Track-side seating–no chairs, please–is available for 18-and-up attendees only with valid ID.) Come hungry, too, and our grill masters will fill you up with all the hamburgers and hot dogs you can eat.

DON’T FORGET: EACH DONATION OF BLOOD AND/OR A TOY GETS YOU 1 ADDITIONAL RAFFLE TICKET! As part of GRR’s pledge to give back to the community, in conjunction with this bout we are hosting another blood drive (ages 16 and up) with LIFESOUTH, as well as a toy collection for the TOYS FOR TOTS program (toys must be new and unwrapped).
