First GRR All Star WFTDA Home Bout of the Season vs. Alamo City Rollergirls, Sunday, April 21!!!

After entering the WFTDA rankings at #51, the Gainesville Roller Rebels are excited to show the hometown crowd their new All Star roster. Recruiting talent from nearby leagues, as well as developing a crop of fresh talent, GRR is excited to showcase their newest skaters. But don’t worry, your favorite Rebels will be hitting the track, too! As our bout poster would suggest, Grizzly Madams, will be blocking her heart out along with Noam Bombsky, Atomic Mel-Down, and Block Buster to protect and serve GRR Jammers LeBrawn Maimes, Krispy Kreme-Her, and of course, The Jamburglar. How will GRR fair against San Antonio’s Alamo City Rollergirls’s, currently ranked #91 in WFTDA? Are the blocks bigger from these Texans? Find out Sunday, April 21st at Skate Station Funworks!

Rebels with a Cause 5K : Walk, Run, or Roll!

GRR and STRIVE (Sexual Trauma and Interpersonal Violence Education) are partnering to host the Rebels With a Cause 5K on March 16th.

Participants of the 5K can either walk, run, or skate the entire route!

Proceeds of this event benefit Peaceful Paths of Gainesville and Gainesville Roller Rebels.

The Gainesville Roller Rebels will face-off against the Gold Coast Derby GRRLs for their last bout of the season. This is the first time GRR and GCDG have met on the track since September 2011. How will they fare against one another this time? Best to come see for yourself !!

November’s Rebel of the Month is Roustabout #2112

Roller derby name and number: Roustabout #2112

Roller derby position – on the track: Referee or NSO, wherever I’m needed. I love officiating for roller derby. There’s a definite satisfaction that comes with it. Lately I’ve compared it to playing Tetris. It feels great when the entire official crew syncs up.

Roller derby position – off the track: I’ve got the honor of being the head referee for the league, as well as one of the WFTDA representatives for our league. I do both because I enjoy helping people learn new things, and I really like networking with people who love the sport like I do. Plus I kind of geek out on the rules.

How long have you been involved with roller derby and/or GRR? I started out as a fan about two years ago. I came to a couple of games until RuBrawl, one of our senior officials, asked me to fill in as an NSO. I reluctantly agreed, and then was instantly hooked. I saw the refs skating and I thought, “I want to do that!”

How did you come up with your name and number?“ Roustabout” is a reference to Nick Stahl’s character on the show Carnivale. He’s a “rousty” : one of the blue-collar grunts that puts up the circus tents. I guess I think about reffing in a similar way, when it comes to derby. We’re here to put up the tents and make sure it runs smoothly.

2112 is the name of an album by Rush. It’s an absurd prog-rock masterpiece. I can’t get enough.

Do you have any pre- or post-bout rituals? I double- and triple-check our track bag we use for set up. I also like to have a zebra grazing with the official crew where we can catch up and eat some carbs. That, and I listen to guitar rock at ear-piercing volumes in my car.

What is your favorite thing about officiating roller derby for GRR? My favorite thing about officiating for this sport is that I get to give back, in a small way, to the sport that I love. What I always tell people who have never been to derby before is that there’s a place for everyone. It doesn’t matter what your gender or sexual preference is, whether you’re old or young, or what your body size is. This sport has a place for you, and you’ll be accepted and valued. I really love this sport and the community involved with it. I’m glad that I get to help make sure things are fair and safe for awesome athletes.

What is your most memorable GRR roller derby experience? The most memorable moment was that first time I got to step into the center of the track and NSO during a game. It was such a shift from simply spectating. Now I feel out of place when I don’t have a whistle or a clipboard in my hand at bouts.

If you had a theme song, what would it be? I can narrow it down to two:Limelight by Rush. Or Feel the Pain by Dinosaur Jr.

Aside from roller derby, what are you passionate about? Equality, rooting for the underdog, coffee, comic books, good beer, and anything Larry David has a hand in creating.

What would GRR fans be surprised to know about you? Some might be surprised to know I had long hair all through high school. It was both epic and terrible.

What makes you a Rebel? Well, I try to approach things on their own merit and base judgments on my interpretation of the situation. I dislike maintaining the status quo for that reason alone. Tradition deserves to be shaken up.

Likes: Samurai Jack, Deadwood, Publix Italian subs, and waking up early.

Dislikes: Whistling, fast food drive thrus, and cigarette smoke.

Guilty pleasures: The nice thing about embracing your nerd persona is that there is no such thing as a “guilty pleasure”.

October’s Rebel of the Month is Sisco Inferno, #616

Roller derby name and number: Sisco Inferno, #616

Roller derby position – on the track: Blocker – because I get a secret pleasure from being in people’s way. Doing it in roller derby is much better than walking in front of people on the sidewalk and abruptly stopping.

Roller derby position – off the track: Fundraising and community events coordinator, because I love finding creative ways to both support the team AND bring derby love to the general public.

How long have you been involved with roller derby and/or GRR? I’ve been playing on the team since August 2011, but I’d been thinking about it long and hard since they started in 2007.

How did you come up with your name and number? Sisco’s my last name; Sisco Inferno’s a play on the classic tune “Disco Inferno,” because I love dancing! And fire. I even set myself on fire once but not on purpose. 616 is a fantastically-clever inside joke with myself: it’s the area code of my hometown, Grand Rapids, the airport code for which is GRR. GET IT?!

Do you have any pre- or post-bout rituals? Um, just watch me rant in this video around 3:15.

What is your favorite thing about playing roller derby for GRR? I feel like I should say something inspiring about the incredible women and men I get to play with and the way we continually push each other to grow personally and collectively, because that’s all true, but my favorite thing is getting to hit people.

What is your most memorable GRR roller derby experience? It would have to be our road trip weekend in Asheville against the Blue Ridge Roller Girls (who we’re re-matching [Sat, Oct 13th] SHAMELESS PLUG!). Friends of the league generously shared their NC home and others their cooking skills, making it a wonderful experience. On top of all that, we got a surprise visit from our dearly loved Eh-Nihilator, who taught me to smash when I was just a wee fresh meat.

If you had a theme song, what would it be? You’d think it’d have to be Disco Inferno, but it’s probably something by my favorite band, Electric Six, whose catalog includes a vastly disproportionate representation of songs about dancing, fire, machismo, and hypersexuality. In my happiest derby moments I’m all Dance Commander, smashing around and air guitar-ing like a maniac.

Aside from roller derby, what are you passionate about? Lately, learning to listen to the other side and to love even when I don’t want to. Also oatmeal chocolate chip cookies.

What would GRR fans be surprised to know about you? I had vertigo when I started playing derby. I’ve played violin for 20 years, and was playing with a band before I joined the team. I’m a psychologist in a VA nursing home, which means I spend a lot of time getting to know people over bingo, reminiscing in the sun, and – with the vets with dementia – having genuinely enjoyable conversations about nothing at all.

What makes you a Rebel? When I was a kid, if I was in a good mood I’d hug everything in sight – trees, telephone poles, especially large rocks – without giving two s**ts what anyone thought. As an adult, give me two beers and I’ll still do pretty much the same thing.

Likes: Macaroni and cheese, Michigan in the fall, Mr. Inferno

Dislikes: Poor grammar, you chewing with your mouth open.

Guilty pleasures: Brak, wearing a bear suit, Guitar Hero

GRR vs. Blue Ridge Rollergirls, Sat. October 13

The Gainesville Roller Rebels are facing off against the Blue Ridge Rollergirls on Saturday, October 13th. This will be the second time this season that these teams meet. GRR traveled all the way to Asheville, NC in July for a tough bout against Blue Ridge’s Allstars. Blue Ridge was victorious, but the Rebels have been training hard since. Who will win on GRR’s home turf? Best come to find out!
