Roller derby name and number: Noam Bombsky, #12
Roller derby position – on the track (and why): Blocker, because let’s face it, putting your butt on people all day is fun.
Roller derby position – off the track (and why): Alternate captain #2, mostly because I love helping our league and skaters improve.
How long have you been playing roller derby for GRR? I joined in August 2010, but it took the better part of a year for me to really get the hang of it.
How did you come up with your name and number? My name is a play on Noam Chomsky, whose wikipedia is pretty interesting to read if you have a free hour or five. My number is actually just my best friend’s favorite number, so I figured it must be lucky, right? RIGHT?!
Do you have any pre- or post-bout rituals? Pre-bout: trying really hard to look calm despite internally freaking out. So far, not much luck with that. Post-bout: having a celebratory/consolation (preferably celebratory!) beer.
What is your favorite thing about playing roller derby for GRR? Seriously, everything! But that answer is sort of a cop-out, so I’ll go with seeing the amazing progress our league has and continues to make. I’d never really come across a group of people so passionate and dedicated prior to joining GRR, and seeing the results of that effort in all our wins (and even our hard-fought losses!) is pretty exhilarating.
What is your most memorable GRR roller derby experience? That’s probably a tie between my first time getting MVP Blocker in a bout and getting the You Got Awesome/Noam Bombsky Award from my team at the end of last season. I’m definitely not used to being even remotely decent at anything sports-related, so both of those were pretty special to me.
If you had a theme song, what would it be? She Don’t Use Jelly- The Flaming Lips
Aside from roller derby, what are you passionate about? Sandwiches
What would GRR fans be surprised to know about you? I really really didn’t want a yellow helmet; it was just the only one in my size that the shop had. I have grown to love it though!
What makes you a Rebel? My refusal to do laundry until I’m fully out of clean clothes has resulted in my socks matching about 0% of the time, so I suppose there’s that.
Likes: Food trucks, clean bearings, and when there is an actual good movie available on Netflix streaming
Dislikes: Forgetting my mouthguard, when my dog rolls in mud, soda
Guilty pleasures: Every competition show on Food Network
