REBEL OF THE MONTH QUESTIONS

Roller derby name and number:  Frisky Wicket – #67

Roller derby position – on the track (and why):  I’ve done some blocking and jamming, but I prefer jamming because it allows me to sneaky.

Roller derby position – off the track (and why): Secretary – What can I say, the teacher in me appreciates accurate note taking.

How long have you been involved with roller derby and/or GRR?  I attended my first practice last October.

How did you come up with your name and number?  Wicket is the name of the baby Ewok in Return of the Jedi.  I’ve always felt the Ewoks were underestimated because they’re small and cute, and I think people underestimate me for similar reasons.  So far that’s worked in my favor!  I picked my number because it’s the day I met the boyfriend who introduced me to Atomic Mel-down.  67=6/7=June 7th  We’re not together anymore, but if it hadn’t been for him I don’t know if I ever would have found the amazing world of Derby.

Do you have any pre- or post-bout rituals? I know this is only going to increase my nerdiness, but I like to listen to “Fett’s Vette” before the bout, and I can always be seen sporting my Ewok Spirit Hood at the after party.

What is your favorite thing about playing roller derby for GRR?  Honestly, it’s the other amazing ladies on the team.  I love getting to skate my butt off, and knocking girls over is incredibly empowering, but what truly takes it to the next level is being surrounded by incredible women who truly feel like family.

What is your most memorable GRR roller derby experience?  The first time I jammed in a bout.  I remember every heart pounding second of it.

If you had a theme song, what would it be?  Currently: Chumbawamba’s “Tubthumping”.  If you saw me in our last bout I think you’ll understand.

Aside from roller derby, what are you passionate about?  Books.  I am an honest to god bibliophile.  I also love being outside – hiking, camping, etc.

What would GRR fans be surprised to know about you?  I’m a teacher.  I orginally taught elementary music, and now I teach middle school.  My students are always surprised to find out I play Derby.

What makes you a Rebel?  I’m a Rebel because I refuse to give up and I refuse to stay down.
