FEATURED CHARITY
Raffle proceeds from tonight's bout go to the The ESOL Closet.
The ESOL Closet was established in 1999 with a donation of one couch. Since that time we have helped hundreds of families by giving them what they need to begin their lives in a new home. We have helped immigrant families, unhoused families who have been placed in homes, veterans who have been given an apartment, abused women and migrants. We help families who have children in Alachua County schools. Those who need help come through various Alachua County agencies.
Because of the generosity of people in our community ( and social media), we have been able to give families household items, beds, cleaning supplies, sheets and towels, clothes and shoes. We have given away everything from small hotel shampoo bottles to major appliances, school supplies and food- all for free.
We have had wonderful support from the administrators at Gainesville High School where we are housed, Auto Plaza and our dear friends. We are happy to make appointments and arrangements for pickup of donations in Alachua County.
In tonight’s raffle, win entry for up to 4 people to Bragging Rights, where you and your friends can play hundreds of classic and modern arcade games, pinball, and carnival games! Unlimited play for each entry ticket.
DERBY 101
So how is roller derby played?
There are two 30-minute periods in a game, and each jam is two minutes long. At the start of the jam, each team sends out five skaters: four blockers and a jammer. The jammer wears a star on their helmet. The jammers try to get past the opposing team’s blockers, and the blockers try their best to stop the jammer from passing them. After the jammer passes all of the blockers once, they start earning one point for each opposing blocker they pass. The first jammer to get out becomes the “lead jammer” and they have the power to call off the jam.
