2020 saw a surge of new roller skaters all over the world — and all over social media. It makes sense that skating is the pandemic pastime for so many: it’s fun, accessible, and great exercise!
So whether you’ve been posting tons of skating TikToks, or you’re a new skater working on the basics — or you’ve never actually strapped on wheels before — the Gainesville Roller Rebels invite you to a FREE, virtual introduction to the world of roller derby!
If you have ever wanted to get involved in the roller derby community, this is the first step! You have two chances to catch our virtual 101, where we’ll introduce you to the sport of roller derby, our league, and our training programs — as well as share skating basics and resources.

Is Roller Derby 101 for You?
Roller Derby 101 is perfect for anyone who is interested in:
- Joining a community of skaters
- Becoming an on-skates referee
- Becoming a non-skating official (NSO)
- Volunteering with a not-for-profit organization
GRR welcomes folks from all walks of life. We welcome all races, sizes, genders, ages, sexual orientations, and abilities. All you need is yourself and your interest in roller derby!
A Few Things:
- There is no skating during this recruitment event and you don’t need anything besides a way to take notes.
- Recruitment is open to all genders. Our competitive skating team is limited to women, gender-expansive, and gender non-conforming people, but we are always looking to recruit folks of all genders who are interested in reffing or volunteering. Our sport could not exist without people in these important roles.
- All skill levels are welcome: we’ve designed our training program to take you from zero to derby hero!
